A Day Trip to Point Reyes and the Cypress Tree Tunnel through the eyes (and lens) of a photographer
If you're looking for a picturesque escape from the hustle and bustle of the Bay Area, a day trip to Point Reyes National Seashore should be at the top of your list.
This stunning coastal destination in Northern California offers a wealth of natural beauty and unique experiences, but one highlight stands out: the stunning Cypress Tree Tunnel.
As a photographer, I can't help but be captivated by this incredible spot, so my husband and I took a day trip out to Point Reyes and the Tree Tunnel.
My husband (also a photographer) snagged a couple photos of me throughout the day geeking out over the beauty of nature, so take a look below for some photos of me as well as some I took!
The Allure of Point Reyes National Seashore
Point Reyes National Seashore is a treasure trove of natural wonders, with its rugged coastline, scenic vistas, and diverse ecosystems. From the dramatic cliffs of the Pacific Coast to the serene beauty of the rolling hills, there’s something for everyone here.
Unfortunately, it was quite foggy the day my husband and I went, so the majority of the photos I captured were from the cypress tree tunnel and the Point Reyes Shipwreck in Inverness (check out the couple photos below).
The Cypress Tree Tunnel: A Photographer's Dream
Among the many highlights of Point Reyes, the Cypress Tree Tunnel is a true gem. Located near the historic Point Reyes Lighthouse, the Tree Tunnel is a natural archway formed by a grove of ancient Monterey Cypress trees. The tunnel creates a captivating, almost ethereal scene that feels like something out of a fairy tale, truly.
As a photographer and also previous environmental scientist, the Cypress Tree Tunnel is this beautiful vision of nature’s artistry that meets leading lines (a photographer’s dream). The intertwining branches of the cypress trees form a dramatic, arching canopy that creates stunning light and shadow play. The soft light that filters through the tunnel is perfect for adding a magical touch to your photos, whether you are a photographer yourself or a family/individual going there to take your own photos.
Right outside the tree tunnel where a lot of people park are stunning golden fields (golden at this time of year in late summer) so I couldn’t help but take photos of that as well.
How to Make the Most of Your Visit
1. Plan Your Timing: To get the best light for photography, consider visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The soft, golden light during these times can enhance the natural beauty of the tunnel and provide a more dramatic effect. There will also be way fewer people since it is a popular tourist time. I had to creatively photoshop some people out and angle some photos to make it look empty.
2. Bring Your Camera Gear (if you’re a photographer): If you’re a photographer, make sure you have your camera gear ready to capture the beauty of the tunnel. A wide-angle lens is particularly useful for showcasing the full expanse of the cypress canopy. However, I would also recommend a Zoom lens and a lens with a lower aperture to work with the low light conditions and to try and snag a shot without a bunch of tourists.
3. Explore the Surroundings: While the Cypress Tree Tunnel is the star attraction, don’t miss out on exploring the surrounding area. Point Reyes National Seashore has many other scenic spots, including the rugged cliffs of the coastline, the serene beaches, and the historic lighthouse. I unfortunately drove out to the lighthouse and shoreline but it was absolutely entirely foggy, so I had to give up at a certain point haha.
This was a little place down the ways from the tree tunnel that we couldn’t help but stop at to take a couple of photos!
4. Respect Nature: It could be the old marine conservationist and environmental biologist in me, but I really truly value leaving places cleaner than you found them. A lot of tourists travel to Point Reyes, so make sure not to leave any trash or trace. Stay on marked paths to avoid damaging the delicate ecosystem and always follow park guidelines to help preserve the beauty of this incredible location for future generations.
